1st Edition, 11th Impression – 1961
George Allen & Unwin, London

This is the eleventh impression of the first edition of The Fellowship of the Ring, originally published in 1954 by J.R.R. Tolkien. This volume is part one of The Lord of the Rings, which became a cornerstone of modern fantasy literature.

The book is bound in its original red cloth, featuring the gilt-stamped title on the spine. The binding remains tight, with some minor wear visible along the edges and the spine. The overall cloth condition is clean, with only slight fading and discoloration, particularly along the spine. The top, fore and bottom edges are indicating light reading wear.

The dustwrapper retains the iconic illustration designed by Tolkien himself, showing the One Ring surrounded by the Elvish inscription. The dustwrapper has aged gracefully with mild discoloration around the edges and slight wear at the spine ends, typical for a book of this age. However, the text and artwork remain sharp and unfaded. This is a correct 11th impression jacket, alas priceclipped.

Inside, the front endpapers are clean, free of markings or previous ownership signatures. There is no visible foxing, and the text block remains in excellent condition with minimal toning, preserving the crispness of the pages. The maps, as integral parts of this story, include a fold-out map of The West of Middle-earth at the End of the Third Age, which is still intact at the rear of the book. The map of A Part of The Shire is present opposite page 24, a familiar visual companion to the text.

Despite being an eleventh impression, this edition maintains the original format, with no alterations to the text. The high quality of the paper ensures the book remains a strong collectible, with only minor signs of handling throughout.

This book is a significant part of Tolkien's publishing legacy, marking the continuation of the early print runs for The Fellowship of the Ring. As a mid-impression copy, it offers a blend of historical value and collectible condition, making it an appealing addition to any Tolkien enthusiast's collection.

A very nice collectible copy for the Tolkien enthusiast.
