ISBN: 004823091X

This stunning deluxe edition of The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien is a 1990 11th impression, printed on India paper, allowing the entire epic tale to be bound in one volume of manageable size. Issued by Unwin Hyman, this hardback edition is beautifully housed in a black slipcase. The book’s cover design features Tolkien’s own intricate illustration, which incorporates iconic symbols from Middle-earth.

The black slipcase shows minimal signs of wear, with the gold-embossed title on the spine still clear and bright. There are light scuffs around the edges, but the structure remains solid.
The book is bound in black cloth with Tolkien’s gold and green heraldic design on the front cover. The binding is tight, with no visible cracking on the spine.
Printed on ultra-thin India paper, the pages are clean and free of foxing. The text block is intact, with no tears or markings, making for a pristine reading experience.
As with other deluxe editions, the endpapers feature maps of Middle-earth, Gondor, Rohan, and Mordor. The map showing “A Part of the Shire” appears on page 30, and the map titled “The West of Middle-earth at the End of the Third Age” is included as well.

This edition was first published in 1969 and has seen several reprints. This 11th impression from 1990 marks the final reprint of this luxurious format. While the ISBN is 004823091X, it is important to note that this number is not printed in the book itself, though it is a known identifier for this edition. One unique feature of this version is the quality of the India paper, which helps keep the thickness of the volume manageable despite the significant length of the work.

The India Paper edition is highly sought after for its compact form and luxurious design. It is ideal for collectors who want a complete and unabridged version of The Lord of the Rings in a single volume, designed to highlight Tolkien’s attention to both content and presentation.
